The purpose of Learning By Design is to bring an armchair tour of some of the most innovative and effective education projects that have been recently undertaken across the United States to K–12 and post-secondary education facility and design decision makers.

When reading this edition, please consider the features found in each project that make them optimal learning environments. Some are clearly by design: the scale of the building, the type of material chosen for the façad or the variety and appropriateness of the interior finishes. Others are tied to pedagogy, adaptation to technology, health and security, or access to nature and daylight. Typically a building is truly balanced when input into its design was contributed by all stakeholders and a consensus opinion informs but does not 100% dictate the final design. In turn, the constructed facility embodies the professional design knowledge applied yet reflects values, beliefs, aspirations, and financial wherewithal of the collective community it supports.

Throughout Learning By Design, readers will find projects of importance that provide insight into and examples of: facility evaluation tools; uncommon yet progressive new spaces; thoughtful adaptive reuse and/or renovations of existing facilities; and great new 21st-century buildings at a variety of price ranges.

Think of this publication as a school and university leaders’ guide to architectural services. Each project represents what the sponsoring architects consider an example of their finest work. All projects have been reviewed and judged by a panel of distinguished education architects, planners, and facility construction and operations professionals.

Representatives of firms featured in this issue of Learning By Design are ready and eager to answer any question you might have about their projects, services, or design processes.
